Ahh, both cities have a greater and lesser paper. If Derek had read the Denver Post more, he'd see that their columnists are talking about how the Avs are playing good hockey now, not good hockey in the past. And besides, their beat writer is predicting the Wings in 7.

let the party begin. I'm sure the inflammatory columns will get more refined as the series goes on. Can't use all their best ammo in the first day.

One major problem is that the Denver media isn't particularly clever. "Oh, let's mock Detroit for how filthy it is!" I mean, it could try to muster some clever jabs about mayoral scandals or automobile manufacturing, but no, it's as if the columnists are local community college graduates offered a job after they've edited a Wikipedia page. And the tired, tired excuses of "Plus, Colorado was without Sakic in all four games against the Red Wings, and Ryan Smyth and Paul Stastny each appeared in only two" are pitiful. I mean, it would just be something to man up and say, "Look, the Avs did not play the Wings well. But they're playing their best hockey right now." Don't try to excuse their past repeat shutouts. It's desperate.

(I should qualify that the Rocky Mountain News is jaw-droppingly bad. The Denver Post is respectable.)

(I should also qualify that the Detroit Free Press is like a children's paper, and its columns are more likely to read like refrigerator scrawlings than witty articles. The Detroit News, especially Bob Wojnowski, is far better, but he's quite busy with the Pistons simultaneously, so it's not solely Wings mode yet.)
